Disc Problems
What is a ‘slipped disc’?
The term ‘slipped disc’ is commonly used to describe a spinal disc injury, although it is not technically accurate. The discs between the vertebrae are firmly attached and cannot actually slip out of place. However, they can become damaged, causing the disc to bulge or herniate.
Spinal discs act as shock absorbers between the bones of the spine. Over time, repeated bending, lifting, twisting, poor posture and prolonged sitting can place strain on the discs. As a disc becomes worn, the tough outer layer may weaken, allowing the softer inner material to bulge outward. This is known as a disc herniation.
A herniated disc can cause inflammation and may irritate or compress a nearby spinal nerve, leading to symptoms such as lower back pain, leg pain (sciatica), numbness, tingling or weakness.
Is it a common problem?
Disc injuries are often blamed for back pain, but they are not always the cause. In fact, many cases of back pain and sciatica are caused by irritation of the joints, muscles and ligaments of the spine rather than a disc problem.
That said, disc herniations are a common condition that we see regularly at Newbury Chiropractic Centre. The good news is that most cases respond well to conservative treatment and do not require surgery.
In a small number of cases, however, surgery may be necessary. If you experience back pain with leg pain and notice changes in bladder or bowel function, numbness around the saddle area, or significant weakness in the legs, you should seek urgent medical attention as these may be signs of a rare but serious condition known as Cauda Equina Syndrome.
How can Chiropractic help?
At Newbury Chiropractic Centre, our chiropractors have extensive experience in assessing and treating patients with disc-related pain and sciatica.
A thorough examination allows us to determine whether your symptoms are likely to be caused by a disc injury and, if so, the severity of the problem. We can then create a personalised treatment plan designed to reduce pain, improve mobility and support your recovery.
Treatment may include chiropractic adjustments, mobilisation, soft tissue therapy, rehabilitation exercises, postural advice and lifestyle recommendations. We also work closely with local GPs and imaging providers when further investigation is required.
Many patients with disc injuries experience significant improvement with conservative chiropractic care and are able to return to normal activities without the need for surgery.
Can disc injuries be prevented?
While it is not always possible to prevent disc injuries completely, there are several steps you can take to reduce your risk:
- Maintain good core strength and overall fitness
- Use correct lifting techniques
- Avoid prolonged sitting where possible
- Take regular movement breaks throughout the day
- Maintain a healthy weight
- Avoid smoking
- Address episodes of back pain early before they become more serious
Strong back and abdominal muscles help support the spine and reduce the strain placed on the discs during everyday activities.
If you are suffering from back pain, sciatica or think you may have a disc problem, our experienced team would be happy to assess your condition and advise on the most appropriate treatment options.
