Problems with shoulders, arms, elbows and wrists

Shoulder pain and stiffness

There are many potential causes of shoulder pain and stiffness and while your chiropractor or osteopath will usually be able to identify the underlying problems by undertaking a careful history and clinical examination, imaging (x-rays) may be required to confirm the diagnosis.

Your clinician has a range of treatment options availiable including manipulation, mobilisation and ultrasound for your condition. Lifestyle advice and home exercises will be offered to aid recovery.

Shoulder, arm, elbow and wrist pain

Pain in the upper limb can affect your ability to work, exercise, sleep and enjoy everyday activities. Problems can arise from the joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments or nerves, and symptoms are often felt not only at the site of the injury but also elsewhere along the arm.
At Newbury Chiropractic Centre, our experienced chiropractors and massage therapists regularly assess and treat a wide range of shoulder, arm, elbow and wrist conditions. Following a thorough history and examination, we will identify the most likely cause of your symptoms and recommend the most appropriate treatment plan.

Shoulder pain

The shoulder is one of the most mobile joints in the body, making it particularly vulnerable to injury and dysfunction.

Common causes of shoulder pain include:

Shoulder impingement

=

Frozen shoulder

=

Bursitis

=

Tendonitis

=

Arthritis

=

Sporting injuries

=

Referred pain from the neck

Symptoms may include pain when lifting the arm, difficulty sleeping on the affected side, weakness, stiffness or reduced movement.

Treatment may include joint mobilisation, soft tissue therapy, rehabilitation exercises, postural advice and guidance on activity modification to help restore movement and reduce pain.

Arm pain

Pain in the upper arm may originate from the shoulder, neck or local muscles and tendons.

Common causes include:

=

Muscle strains

=

Tendon injuries

=

Nerve irritation from the neck

If arm pain is accompanied by numbness, tingling or weakness, this may indicate nerve involvement which requires careful assessment.

Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis)

=

Golfer's elbow (medial epicondylitis)

The wrist and hand contain many small joints, tendons and nerves that can become irritated through overuse, injury or repetitive activities.

Common causes include:

=

Repetitive strain injuries

=

Tendonitis

Carpal tunnel syndrome
